Update 14 January 2022

Hello to you all.

This is an update on the COVID 19 outbreak at Abel Tasman Village. As at today, we have no residents requiring isolation from a COVID 19 diagnosis. All 3 residents previously diagnosed are now out of their isolation period. We have 5 staff who are still off work isolating. The last positive diagnosis for staff was on 10th January 2022.

We have met with the Public Health Unit, Commonwealth Department representatives, NSW Health representatives, Aged Care Commission representatives and the Local Health District. They are very happy with the way the outbreak has been managed and they have advised us that we can declare the outbreak over. This is wonderful news! However, staff will continue to wear increased personal protective equipment as advised. We will begin the process of de-isolating residents shortly. Visiting will recommence from Wednesday 19th January 2022. The intervening days will be spent ensuring no further residents are exhibiting symptoms, reactivating the booking system on the website and removing all outbreak signage and equipment. We anticipate having the booking system back on deck by close of business on Tuesday.

In relation to outings, we would ask families to be very particular in taking residents out. Of course, medical appointments are absolutely essential. However, given the number of cases in the community, I’m sure family members do not want to expose their loved one to any chance of infection so careful thought must be given to occasions where you may want to take a resident to a family function etc. We will work with you to ensure that any outing is as safe as possible.

Congratulations must go to the entire team including our wonderful residents. It has not been an easy time. I must pay particular attention to our Outbreak Coordinator, Harry, who has led his clinical team with calm professionalism and determined focus. The ATV staff have been fantastic – it has certainly not been easy for them wearing full PPE in hot conditions. In addition, many of the staff have put their hands up to work extra hours to cover staff absences. We are truly grateful for the wonderful team we have. Their vigilance and care has brought about this great outcome.

Of course, we cannot expect that COVID will not enter our gates again. However, given our experience this time around, we are confident that we can manage another outbreak if it happens. We will be conducting a debriefing workshop to analyse the outbreak and look for opportunities to improve our processes and protocols.

In closing, can I express the team’s appreciation to all families. We know how difficult this situation has been for you all and we are grateful for your continued support. We will look forward to seeing you coming back through the gates!

Regards
